Have you ever visited a museum and by looking at the artist’s work, thought of something you wanted to express but quite couldn’t. May be you didn’t find a tangible representation of your idea, your concept.

Conceptual art..Abstraction to semi-concrete to concrete. The range can be expanded with subtle variations in between. The idea is “Anything can be art.”

CONCEPTUAL ART CONTAINS AN IDEA, A CONCEPT. Idea becomes the machine. It’s not about how the art looks but the idea behind it. Poking imagination. Teasing you to a higher understanding of the concept. Gestalt. Idea stands above the form. The form is the vehicle for the idea. Artist makes an aesthetic statement. Art becomes more dimensional.
We can think of visual art as a language, semiotics. Sometimes language within a language. The main purpose is to engage the mind rather than the eye or emotion. It can be out of the medium and blending different media. e.g. Art and language can be juxtaposed. And eventually finding the best form for the idea.

The interesting thing is banal ideas cannot be rescued by beautiful execution. An artist’ s will is secondary to the process. Even, the artist himself or herself might not have full understanding of the idea. Audience completes it. Process is so significant that it should not be tampered with.

In short, Idea is a machine that makes the art. All the materials serve the IDEA. More importantly the absence of the materials also serve the IDEA.

Perceptual art, though may sound similar, is different relating to visual stimuli. Conceptual art is about mind.
